What do Osteopaths do and what can I expect from a treatment?
An Osteopath is like to a mechanic for your body. The underlying philosophy of Osteopathy revolves around structure and function, with treatment aiming to restore optimum function to your body. A variety of techniques are used to restore optimal movement to the muscles, tendons, joints, organs and connective tissues of the body Regardless of your complaint you can expect a thorough health history to be taken, and a full examination of the way your body is moving. Once evaluated your osteopath will determine which approach to take. You might expect deep tissue massage, stretching, muscle energy techniques, gentle indirect unwinding of the connective tissue and joint mobilisation and manipulation. According to your condition and preferences, any of these may be used to greater or lesser degrees to ensure your treatment is both safe and effective. Home exercises or stretches may also be prescribed.
Will osteopathic treatment hurt?
Not usually. Muscle work and massage are conducted first to increase the blood flow to the area before any manipulations are done. These can vary from gentle pressure to effect a 'release' to a more vigorous moving of the joints. An osteopath is trained to know how much force to apply in any adjustment. This can be the lightest of touch on a baby or an older person to a stronger movement in a healthy young person.
